How do you decide on a subject to paint?  What sparks the creativity in you?

I find that early in the morning my brain is very active.  My imagination is busy and things almost appear out of the ether.  Other times I'm inspired by visual beauty, this occurs most when light does something I didn't expect, or is particularly breathtaking.  Color can trigger me too.  For instance, I love the blue color made by shadows cast on the snow!  I read and listen to a lot of classical literature, fairy tales, and mythology which shape the images that come to mind.  Art History is a big influence.  I never tire of looking at Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Hopper, Bernini, Caillebotte, and Monet whose work always causes me to swoon.  Biblical imagery is especially exciting to me.  Consider this from Isaiah 55, "You will go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands."
